Local Facts

Reflection Pointe is located in the eastern Gaston County city of Belmont. The Catawba River and its tributary, the South Fork River, form two arms of Lake Wylie and form a peninsula on which Belmont is located.

Originally settled in 1750s by Dutch settlers, Belmont has been known as “Fort at the Point” and “Garibaldi.” At the suggestion of Bishop Leo Haid, founder of Belmont Abbey College, the name of our city was changed to Belmont in 1883.

Belmont has a rich history of industry, commerce, and education. One of the first cotton mills in Gaston County was opened in 1853 just 2 1/2 miles from present day downtown Belmont in the South Point Community. Today, you travel down South Point Road to visit our secluded, gated community – Reflection Pointe.

Belmont has been called quaint and Mayberry-like, but it is much more than that. The downtown shopping district has undergone a renaissance in the past several years. Local entrepreneurs have opened apparel stores, restaurants, pet stores, and other retail shops.

Each summer the Belmont Merchants Association sponsors “Friday Night Live,” a series of outdoor street concerts. The City of Belmont Parks and Recreation sponsors a variety of activities for residents of all ages.

Just 10 minutes from Reflection Pointe is the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, a 450 acre landscape of lush green plants, colorful flowers, and 12 beautiful waterfalls. The nine themed gardens form the initial sections of the gardens which are planned to expand in the coming years. This place is a haven for all those interested in photography, bird watching, gardening, and painting.

Belmont is also home to Belmont Abbey College, a liberal arts college founded in 1876. US News and World Report named Belmont Abbey College one on the best liberal arts colleges in the South. Students from over 34 states and 17 countries call Belmont home for 9 months each year.

The Sisters of Mercy also call Belmont home. Their former Sacred Heart College campus is now home to Catherine’s House, a residential facility for homeless women and their children; House of Mercy, a facility providing a home and specialized care for persons living with AIDS; and Holy Angels, home to children and adults with mental and physical challenges.
